Is Glenn Beck being used by God?

A handful of prominent evangelical activists are defending their decision to attend television host Glenn Beck's conservative rally in Washington this weekend after some Christians complained that evangelicals shouldn't be partnering with Beck because of his Mormon faith. Is Glenn Beck being used by God as Jim Garlow, an influential California pastor, wrote in a five-page memo this week? Mr. Beck has always been outspoken about his faith and beliefs as a member of the Mormon Church. 'Glenn is saved,' " Garlow said in his memo, which was dated Wednesday. "He understands receiving Christ as savior." I can only think that Mr. Garlow has no concept as to what the beliefs are of the LDS Church to justify this statement.

Now please check out this brief list of Mormon teachings documented from Mormon writers:

•Mormonism also teaches that there are many gods, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 163).

•There is a mother goddess, (Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, p. 443).

•After you become a good Mormon, you have the potential of becoming a god, (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pages 345-347, 354).

•God used to be a man on another planet, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 321).

•The Trinity is three separate gods, (James Talmage, Articles of Faith, p. 35).

•God the Father has a body of flesh and bones, (Doctrine and Covenants, 130:22).

•God is married to his goddess wife and has spirit children, (Mormon Doctrine p. 516).

By contrast, Christianity, which is based on the Bible, says there is only one God (Isa. 43:10; 44:6,8; 45:5); that God is a Trinity of persons, not three gods; that God has always been God (Psalm 90:2); that God knows of no other gods (Is. 44:8); that you cannot become a god (Is. 43:10); and that God is spirit (John 4:24). This contradicts Mormonism. Therefore, Mormonism is not biblical, and not Christian. If Glen Beck holds to the teachings listed above, then he is not a Christian.

I now leave it up to you. Is Glenn Beck "Saved"? And is Mr. Beck being used by God to bring America back to Him?

Well, God DID use non-Hebrew people in the Old Testament to benefit the Hebrews when He chose. SO, God MIGHT be using Beck and people like him to accomplish some sort of good in this country. Mormanism, however, is deemed a cult by understanding Christians.

Hey Lloyd! I hope I don't ruffle too many feathers. Even though I strongly disagree with Glenn Beck on doctrinal issues, we must analyze the argument.

First, even though he says he is a Mormon, that does not necessarily mean that he believes in everything the Mormon church teaches. As there are many denominations in Christianity, I am sure there are many differing views in the Mormon church.

The assumption is that because he is a Mormon, he believes in all the bullet points you have mentioned--that may not be accurate. Has he actually come out and said he supports those particular issues? I personally do not know, but I invoke the question.

For example, very few Mormons believe that polygamy is right, but it is one of the first things that pop into people's minds when someone believes in the Mormon faith.

It would be like me saying that all Catholics are not Christians because they believe Mary was sinless. Do I believe that view is unbiblical? Yes.

But what makes a person a Christian? You must believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, trust in His redemption, repent of your sins, and follow after Him.

Obviously, some of those points you have listed conflict with Christianity, but we are assuming that the individual believe 100 percent what the Mormon church teaches, which may not be entirely accurate.

I believe that Mr. Beck is good intentioned, and I believe that we as religious people (put aside the differing views for the moment...we can deal with them later) need to fight with polite words this atheistic, evolutionary, God-less movement that is sweeping over America and trying to remove God from society.

There is a bigger contrast between an atheist and a Christian than there is between a Christian and a Mormon. Are the worldview of both the atheist and the Mormon unbiblical? I believe so.

But God knows the heart and many people have been wrong at some point in their own beliefs, but will not be barred entrance into Heaven, unless they have not put their faith in the Son of God, Jesus Christ.

No one but God knows Mr. Beck's heart; let's leave it between him and the LORD.

Interesting subject. I have been thinking about a blog post of my own on the subject but I have just a few thoughts in response to your post.

You ask two questions; Is Beck saved? and is he being used by God?

I have listened closely to Glenn's "testamony" and read some of his writings, and I have listened carefully to many of his programs where he defends the Christian faith. On the basis of his words, and his actions, one would be hardpressed to distinguish him from any other professing Christian. In fact I have posted on my own blogsite, his Easter message here:

http://notallowed2laff.blogspot.com/2010/04/which-jesus.html

It is a stunning message about the work of Christ in salvation. Glenn Beck presents a clearer articulation of orthodox Christianity and a much better "testamony" than many of the professing Christians I know. So that creates a conundrum for me.

One of your other readers suggests that he may not know or believe in all the wierd, whacked out, unbiblical teachings of the Cult of Latter Day Saints. And I would be the first to defend any ignorant, "baby Christian" who is truly saved my grace alone, even though they might believe all sorts of unbiblical "christian" doctrines that are being taught in what, many would call, mainstream Christian churches.

BUT in Glenn's case, I have a hard time giving him a pass here. In his programs and books he has been very careful to thoroughly examine and weigh the evidence in his understanding of history and politics. So I would find it hard to believe that he has not critically researched the teachings of his own religion. Therefore I would be hesitant to trust in his salvation.

But Is he being used by God? To that question, I would not hesitate to answer YES! I watched him at his 8-28 rally in DC.
Frankly, that was an amazing, unapologetic call to the nation to repent and turn back to God.

Overall, with his lineup of guests and participants, God was honored and glorified. And. at the risk of sounding cynical, he did a better job of focusing our attention on God that a lot of preachers in man-centered, seeker-friendly churches on Sunday mornings.

Historically, we can look back at our nation's founders and agree that many of them were devout and some of them were saved Christians. Nevertheless, most of us would agree that God acted sovereignly and providentially in the founding of this nation. And, we know, from scripture, that he uses many people, both saved and lost, to accomlish His work and His will.

Praise God for Glenn Beck and pray for his salvation.

Hi Lloyd,

Scripture indicates that God used an ass to communicate with Baalam, a man who was morally, ethically and religiously bankrupt; I suppose if God chose to, He could use Glen Beck.

While I see no benefitr in supporting the rants of Beck, I can't ignore the possibility of God using him. That does not mean that I believe God is using him.

He is an entertainer, he's paid to excite, incite, and work the emotions of his viewing audience. Glenn Beck stands at the front of the line of citizens who have no respect for the office of the presidency. Because of his dislike for the President, he has taken a position which disrespects the authority of the highest postion in the US.

American citizens are free to exercise dissent but when dissent becomes a rant than incites disorder and disrespect for the office of the presidency, it's wrong.

I'll leave the judgement of his beliefs and life to God. But those who align themselves with a jester masquerading as a political/religious leader need to take care, just as those religious leaders who align themselves with abortion and gay rights advocates.

Blessings and peace.

Very timely post!!

Mormons are not saved. It is a very damaging cult that uses biblical terminology to sound Christian but distort their true beliefs.

I like Glen Beck's stances on most political and social issues and agree with them.

If God can use a donkey, Dairus, and other non-believers, He can use Glen Beck. The problem for me is where to draw the line. Our faith is supposed to be a part of every aspect of our lives. If that is true for Beck, that is the problem. Mormonism is not an answer for any problem our nation faces. Is God using this unbeliever? I am not sure. As believers, we need to prayfully watch, listen, and pray. I would never vote for him in any election because of his faith, but politically I like what he says. It is a really hard one to call but something we all need to consider as Christians.

I agree with Zach S's statement, especially those four words which are so crucial--God knows the heart; HOWEVER, I disagree with Zach S's statement of leaving it all between Beck and God because we'd miss a great opportunity to present truth to some who may be deceived.

You've done an outstanding job of exposing the errors of the Mormon church under the light of God's Word here, Lloyd.

Is Beck basing his salvation on the beliefs of the Mormon church or on Jesus Christ alone? Has he been born again? That I cannot answer and only God knows. I know that among Christians there are many who have not been born again and are simply following a tradition, so in the end, God is the only one who knows.

Do I think God can use Beck for His purposes? Absolutely. After all, He even used a donkey with Balaam. Oops, no pun intended. No, really, if He can even use me with all my imperfections, He can use anyone. He even uses what the enemy intends for evil.

We must pray. Pray for blind eyes to be opened, including our own in any area we may be deceived. In the end, His children won't be but we can all most certainly fall for the schemes of the enemy at times. I say, "Father, increase our hunger for Your Word."

Hello Lloyd,
I stand by scripture with this one. The Bible says about men such as Mr. Beck, "Whoever trasngresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds," 2nd John 1:9-11. Denying that Christ is God is central to Mormonism; otherwise their theology falls to pieces. Denying that Jesus is God, according to the Bible, means that you are operating under the spirit of the Antichrist, 1st John 4:1-3. In this respect they are no better (and perhaps more implacable) than the athiest.
In the Old Testament the people of God were chastened for allying with the ungodly, such as Jehoshaphat and Ahaziah in 2nd Chronicles 20:35-37. We are not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers, 2nd Corinthians 6:14. Unless he is genuinely saved, his efforts will not help the church, and will cause more confusion. Ian.

It is easy to forget that God used Pilate, Herod, and the Chief priests to accomplish his plan. He also used Pharaoh, Nebuchadnezzar and many other enemies. I think he is using our president and congress as well as Glenn Beck to make us aware of our sin. That doesn't mean I agree with his doctrine or even all he advocates.

Thanks for reminding us that our responsibility is to obey God, rather than to fix the country.

Mormanism is not Christianity, but as your bullet points explain, is a Cult with a different Jesus Christ. We must pray for and bring the true Jesus to these people and all others who do not have a "saving" faith in the real Jesus as their Savior & Lord. Great message. Many did not know this.

Tracy said...

Interesting post & question.

I don't believe I can KNOW if Glen Beck, or anyone else, is saved.

I do know that what the LDS doctrine believes about Jesus and His death on the cross in our place is against those very beliefs that bring us our salvation. As to if Glen really knows & believes the LDS doctrine, I don't know. I have had experiences with many delightful LDS adherents who sounded very Christian but when it came right down to it they did not actually believe in the Triunial God, Jesus being actually God who died in our place - so no they were not Christians. They were great people, but not saved.

But there is another issue here, and that is about politics. IF Glen is not a Christian, could God still be using him? We have several examples in Scripture where God uses those who are not, or not yet, His followers. Off the top of my head I think about how God used the harlot Rahab (although we believe that afterward she came to be His follower, she was initially part of a culture where she had no opportunity to know of the One True God), and even had her be in lineage of Christ our Savior. God even used Balaam's donkey for his purposes. God can use whomever He chooses.

There's also the issue that when it comes to politics someone may not be a Christian, but I still believe that she/he is the best for some specific job, because I'm behind her/his stand on the issues.

Lloyd, thank you for such a provocative post. Certainly the call of Chronicles 7:14 is true (if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land). Who are his people? This is the question ALL religious groups ask. As a skeptic I came to my faith in Christianity and Jesus as Lord through studying the historic circumstances surrounding the death of Jesus. I do not believe Mormon beliefs are consistent with Christianity -- in other words, they are not "Christian plus." I do not know the extent of Mr. Beck's acceptance of Mormonism's views -- this is between him and God. He speaks articulately and well. However, a true revival can only be spearheaded through true values.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I look forward to reading more of yours.
To be honest, I don't know everything about the Mormon faith. I do know that I agree with most of Glenn Beck's political views. He believes in God, and has a strong sense of values and I admire that. Many public figures are usually on the opposite end of the spectrum. They claim to believe in God, but their politics would prove otherwise.
My family attends a Christian church, but my husband was raised a Mormon and his mother is a practicing Mormon. They are both two of the most wonderful people I know.
We are all imperfect, we all have different views, we all can disagree about the details of religion, but it is wonderful that our belief in God unites us.
Have a great day!

Denise and Gorges - Thank you for your visit and encouraging words. Gorges, you are right that God does and did use non-believers. I have not any clue if God is using Beck or not, all I do know is that God is in complete control. The big problem I see with Christians publicly joining together with a professed member of the Mormon Church is that it sends the wrong signals to the lost souls out there who may begin to believe that the Mormon Church is truly a "Christian" church. God bless.

Zach – I want to thank you for your visit. Rest assured you are not ruffling any feathers here on this blog. You make several good points, but the most important thing that I think we need to address is the fact that Mr. Beck, by his own public testimony, choose to become a member of the LDS Church after he attended several other Christian churches. The simple fact is that the Mormon god and jesus are not the same God and Jesus of the Holy Bible.

I agree with you that Mr. Beck has very good intentions and I agree with some of his political views. However, when the Christian community wants to put on a revival to get God back into the hearts and souls of the people, is it wise to team up with a man that believes that Jesus is the brother of Satan or that if he is a good temple worshiping member, he can someday be a “god” of his own world. What I see here is that the “world” might begin to believe that the Mormon Church is truly a “Christian” church because the Evangelical churches are joining together with Mr. Beck (LDS Church) to bring “God” back into America. The question is… which god. Blessings too you my friend.

Ralph M – I agree with you, but my main concern is what I just got through saying to Zach. You know the old saying, “Birds of a feather flock together.” I believe it is sending the wrong message to the world about who God and Jesus are because there is such a different definition between the Mormon god and jesus and the God and Jesus of the Holy Bible. Blessing.

MTJ- Thank you for your visit and comments. I know that sometimes when God used non-believers in the past it was to cast judgment on a nation… I just get a little nervous when we, as Christians; begin to team up with a “cult member” to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. Blessings too you.

amy – I want to thank you personally for your visit and comments. When we put everything before the Lord, He will see us through the most difficult times in our journey home. God bless you.

GOD thinker and rcubes – Thank you for your visits and comments. I agree with you God Thinker, but like I mention to several others, I just have this awful feeling about the Christian community teaming up with the LDS Church (Beck) to spread the TRUTH about God and Jesus. Even though the Mormon Church is not officially involved here, Mr. Beck will be preaching a different god then the God that is in the Holy Bible. Blessings.

Solid Rock or Sinking Sand said...

One Heart – It is always so good to see you here and read your comments. God only knows the heart, as you say, but Mr. Beck has publicly confessed his faith in the jesus of the Mormon Church. I invite anyone who would like to know more about the Mormon believes to watch the two videos on the sidebar of this blog. Blessing too you One Heart.

Ian Curtis – Thank you so much for your visit and encouraging comments. There are so many Christians out there that do not understand what the Mormon Church is all about. I agree whole hardly with your comments and as I have mentioned in above comments, my heart just aches to think that people who are lost or a weaker Christian may fall for some of Mr. Beck’s religious views. God bless.

Dee, middle child, America, Rafael, and Carol – I want to thank you for your visits and comments.

BEAR’s Mom – Thank you for your visit and comment. I also agree with Ian. Thank you so much for the scripture from God’s Word. Blessings.

Vetsy – Thank you for your visit and comments. You are right. God does work in mysterious ways in our lives and the life of all nations. The Judgment Day is nearer then some folks realize, then we will all know whether the things we have done and believed in are what God had in mind. There are so many interpretations of how we are to “Obey God” out there in this sinful and lost world. Blessings.

dfish – Thank you for your visit and words of wisdom. Being you are a pastor, you fully know the consequences of teaming up with a cult member to spread the Word of God. I always enjoy reading your blog and cherish your visits here. God bless.

Brian and Tracy – I want to thank both of you for your visit and comments. It is very true that a lot of folks out there do not understand that the LDS Church is not a “Christian” church. Unfortunately Tracy, a lot of our decisions that we make on political issues are brought about by the way we think on religious issues. Blessings.

Amy Deardon – Thank you for your visit and comments. The scriptures you quote are very true when it comes to God’s people. If you are a Christian, then you know that God’s People are all of those that have accepted Jesus as their Savior and Lord. True values can only come from God’s Word and so I agree with you that a true revival can only be spearheaded through God’s People. Blessings.

Nichole - I want to personally thank you for your visit and comments. There are a lot of folks out there that are not aware that the Mormon Church is not a "Christian" church. I am saying this in the love of our Lord Jesus only because my heart goes out to all of those lost souls that truly believe and are members of the LSD Church. Please view the two videos I have listed in the sidebar of this blog. God bless you.

Lloyd: I agree with your critisms. I do believe that Mormonism has several unbiblical views.

Just for the record, for you and your readers, my main point was that no one can know the heart but God. Those that hold to the bullet points in your original post I struggle in believing to be saved, too.

I am aware Mr. Beck has said he is a Mormon, but from the dialogue I heard on his talk show a while back, the reason he said he joined the Mormon church is that, at the other "Christian" churches he went to, he didn't feel God's love in the people.

Yes, by joining the Mormon church, I struggle in believing he is saved, but it is not my responsibility to know whether or not he is saved. It is my responsibility to pray for and to witness to such people as Mr. Beck.

I know that this is not your personal belief Lloyd, but some of the comments by readers such as this:

"Scripture indicates that God used an ass to communicate with Baalam, a man who was morally, ethically and religiously bankrupt; I suppose if God chose to, He could use Glen[n] Beck."

are not very Christian-like and will not further God's Kingdom. It will not turn people like Mr. Beck to Christ; it will only turn them away. If people want to be called names, they have the world for that; let us not, as Christians, stoop so low that we hurt our own witness.

Disagree, but don't name-call.

We as Christians need to be sure that God's love is evident in our fellowships, so that individuals like Mr. Beck aren't turned away from the church because of the church's lack of Christ-like love.
Rather, let it be the Truth that pricks their hearts...not the sticks and stones we throw from our high horses of being saved...

We must always keep in the fore-fronts of our minds, that we Christians were all lost, blind, and ignorant of the Truth at some point too and have nothing to boast in, but Him.

Blessings in Christ,
~ Zach S.

Zach - Thank you again for your visit. I never met to be critical of your comments. I am fully aware that there are a lot of folks out there that have no idea what the LDS Church teaches. I have family members and several friends who are Mormons and they are the most wonderful folks in the world. But as we all know, being good and wonderful will not get you into heaven.

I agree with you totally that when we witness to the world we must not "lash out" at them with "name calling" and other un-Christian like tactics just because "they" do not agree with what we are saying. Thank you for pointing this out to other readers of this blog. We must always allow Jesus to shine through us so the unsaved world will know that we are God's Children. Llyod, thanks for visiting "A Tree Planted By Water" and inviting us to view your blog. I've enjoying your posts... Especially this one.

First, I would say that God is using Beck, but maybe not the way everyone else means. I believe God is sovereign and that everything and everyone is part of God's plan and purpose. What purpose God has for Beck I do not know. However, I will say that the gospel of Christ crucified is the power of God for salvation (Romans 1:16) and as far as I know, Beck does not talk about Jesus Christ or him crucified. Jesus says that he is the only was to the Father, so I don't believe that Beck is recruiting souls for the Kingdom of God.

Second, I wanted to respond to a point somebody made above (maybe Zack) about There being more contrast between an atheist and a Christian than between a Mormon and a Christian. I beg to differ. Anything other than the true gospel is just as deadly to the soul as atheism. There is no sliding scale of what is closer to being the truth. It is either the truth or it is rubbish. Atheist and Mormons alike will receive the wrath of a just God if they do not surrender their lives to God and put their faith in Jesus.

Solid Rock or Sinking Sand said...

Kristian – Thank you for your visit and sharing your thoughts. I have to agree with you that God is probably using Mr. Beck, but “Why?” I have no clue. You are right when you say that it is not for recruiting souls for the Kingdom of God because Mr. Beck does not believe in the TRUE God, only a false one.

When it comes to comparing two pagans against the other, it really doesn’t make a bit of difference, because either you are for Christ or against Christ. You are either “Saved” or “Lost”… there is no in between. As you said, “There is no sliding scale of what is closer to being the truth.” I have to admit that my heart and soul goes out to all of humanity that worships false gods and not the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. God bless.

Personally I cannot answer either question for sure. Only the Lord and Mr Beck know for sure if he is saved. As for being Mormon - if he truly is a Christian then I do not see how he can become a mormon. Too different in belief. God has used the ungodly to bring back His people before.... so I don't know who or what is behind Mr. Beck in bringing America back to Him. Personally I am skeptical regarding both questions.

Because of what I do know of Mormonism, and it's belief system, I have a hard time believing that Beck is really a Christian. I don't think you can be a true Christian and also support Mormonism. It just doesn't work for me. Although he does say a lot of "good" things, that would make you think he is Christian, I would have to be a little wary.

Is God using him. He might be, but then it could be another influence entirely doing a very good job of mimicking Christianity. A wolf in sheep's clothing so to speak. I like his political stance, but am wary of following anything to do with what he says about faith. Mormons spend a lot of time studying about other faiths, like Christianity so they can talk circles around you, and end up bringing you into Mormonism, if you aren't careful.

Solid Rock or Sinking Sand said...

Michele - Thank you for your visit and comments. It is true. If Mr. Beck is a Mormon he cannot be a Christian. However, like you said - God has used the ungodly in the past. Blessings too you.

Carrie - Thank you for your comments and visit. I visited the link that Pastor McPhearson explains why he teamed up with Glen Beck. I must say it was very interesting. However, that does not ease my concerns which are: 1) When non-believers and weak-believers watch this "revival" are they making the assumption that the Christian God is the same god of the LDS Church? 2) When Mormons are watching this "revival" they are definitely thinking about "their" god and not the God of the Holy Bible. We are to witness to the world of non-believers not team up with them and cause confusion when it comes to the Word of God. God bless.

Julie - Thank you for your visit and comments. I agree with you totally... We must be on guard for false teachers and false doctrines that undermine all what Jesus did for us on the cross. Blessings.

Greetings -

The Holy Spirit once told me to observe body language and countenance when He told me to ask a professing Christian this question, "Are you a Christian?"
The person's lips uttered yes but there was little conviction in his words. The Lord told me to follow up with this question, "Does GOD know that you are a Christian?" Immediately, the person looked guilty and ashamed. He did not answer.

I agree with the other commenters that GOD can use anyone and anything. He is sovereign and does whatsoever He pleases - Ecclesiastes 8:3.
